Maldita Castilla is a 2D action game that pays homage to classics like Ghost'n'Goblins, Shinobi, Rygar, and Trojan. This means both the gameplay and the graphics are highly reminiscent of those titles from the late 80s.
The most direct and obvious influence in Maldita Castilla is the aforementioned Ghost'n'Goblins. In fact, as soon as you begin you're likely to notice marked similarities, including the standard-looking zombies coming out of the ground and your main character's weapon: a spear that you can throw as many times as you want.
Although the game is mainly focused on the action, it also includes some platformer elements. Sometimes it's jumping perfectly from one ledge to another that's necessary in order to continue on your quest. But do be very careful with the huge array of enemies who are trying to kill your hero at all times.
As mentioned above, the visuals in the game pay tribute to the classics. So much so, in fact, that aside from having pixelated graphics, the game also comes with an old monitor filter that's present at all times. The soundtrack, composed by Grizor87, also accompanies the action brilliantly.
Maldita Castilla is an outstanding title created from the ground up by the Spanish Locomalito – and distributed completely for free. Among the best 2D action and platform games you can find.
